- Should Bread be Excluded from the Diet?
-

- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- QUESTION: One of my friends is always on a diet. And she is always handing
- out information on how to lose weight. This week's big tip is to remove all
- bread from your diet. Does this make any sense? I love bread and would
- rather eat that then anything else, but I also have a weight problem. Would
- you please help me with a bit of your good advice.
-

-
- ANSWER: Actually, I love a good piece of bread as well, and so your question
- is one I have had to answer for myself. Truly, bread takes a bad rap in most
- cases, for the average slice of bread is only 60 to 90 calories. And you can
- easily include a slice or two in any sensible diet. However, there are lots
- of types of bread, and you will have to do some label reading to know just
- where you are. Some light breads, that contain 35 to 40 calories, are merely
- thinner slices, so compare equal weights per portion when evaluating both the
- caloric and nutritional content of your food. Bread can be a very good source
- of fiber, minerals and vitamins, and a slice of bread that will help both
- weight control and good nutrition will contain from 2 to 3 grams of fiber per
- slice. The secret in establishing a healthy diet that will keep your weight
- down is to control portion size, rather than to change foods. It's almost as
- hard to eat foods you don't like as to give up those that you love. So eat
- your bread, but in moderation, and after you have carefully checked the labels
- for content.
